(1265-1321) Dante Alighieri is considered the greatest Italian poet. He died 131 years before Leonardo was born.  Dante wrote the epic poem The Divine Comedy,  which tells of his journey through Hell and Purgatory to Heaven. The poem, more than 14,000 lines long, is a masterwork in world literature.
